Just as the last weeks Genoa played a good match, but again we had no points at the end. Because Veloso and Rafinha could not start in Rome our captain Marco Rossi returned in the line-up. Ten minutes before halftime our ex-goalscorer Marco Borriello opened the score to react first after a cross of Totti was touched by Mimmo Criscito: 1-0. At the beginning of the second half Matteo Brighi scored together with Criscito and Rossi a goal that is impossible to score: 2-0. From this moment there was only 1 team in the field: Genoa! Substitute Rudolf first hit the crossbar and 11 minutes before the end scored 2-1, while Luca Toni deserved a penalty when Burdisso took his shirt with 2 hands to stop a header of Toni. Referee Damato closed his eyes and only gave Genoa 5 minutes injurytime but at the end A.S. Roma was the winner: 2-1.

Next Wednesday at 18.00 Genoa plays in Coppa Italia in Luigi Ferraris against Grosseto (Serie B). Saturday some members of Genoa Club Amsterdam fly to Italy to play the calcetto-tournament: United in the name of Genoa and to support Genoa against Catania.

Genoa played very good matches against Fiorentina and A.C. Milan and deserved at least 4 points in these 2 matches, but we got only 1 point. Against Bari it again looked like we were very unlucky when just after halftime Moretti was send away by the referee and Bari scored the very dubious penalty: 1-1 (openinggoal in the first half by Palacio).

 

Also with 10 against 11 Genoa kept attacking and the deserved bonus arrived at the 95th minute: Luca Toni headed the ball behind goalkeeper Gillet of Bari: 2-1. Genoa is now back at the left side of the standings where we belong!

Especially just before and right after halftime Genoa played very good and had big chances (Palacio twice and Chico) to open the score in San Siro. In the 49th minute a long ball of Pirlo behind the Genoa-defense was touched by Ibrahimovic inbetween Dainelli and Ranocchia who both were not agressive enough. Because also Eduardo was too far out of the goal Zlatan scored the undeserved openinggoal. During the rest of the match Genoa did everything to try to score the equalizer, which gave Milan the biggest chances in the contra-attack. Our goalkeeper Eduardo saved us several times, just as Criscito, but at the end we only got the compliments and not the points: Milan-Genoa 1-0.

In this 4th match of the season we saw why Genoa was named as the “King of the tranfermarket” this summer. With the 5 new players Eduardo, Chico, Ranocchia, Veloso and Toni in the line-up Genoa played a fantastic match and deserved a victory against Fiorentina. Only goalkeeper Frey and a lots of luck brought Fiorentina a point in Luigi Ferraris. Also the goal of Forentina was lucky because Gilardino could never have scored if the cross did not hit the back of Mesto. Our midfielder had his revanche a few minutes later: a fantastic combination with Veloso brougth “Joey” Mesto already his second goal of the season: 1-1.

In the rest of the match Genoa tried everything to score the deserved winning goal. Goalkeeper Frey and some luck kept the 1-1 draw on the scorebord after 90 minutes, but if Genoa keeps playing like this the victories are coming soon!

After the unexpected defeat against Chievo there were a lot of rumours in the newspapers. Mr. Gasperini was blamed for his substitution of defender Ranocchia by midfieldplayer Kharja and also our president Mr. Preziosi was not so happy. He spend nearly €50 million this summer and was especially unhappy about the mentality of the players against Chievo. Because of  all of this the team was a little under pressure against Parma. Just as against Chievo our Rossoblu played a fantastic first half an hour. Already in the 2nd minute defender Zaccardo of Parma got a yellow card because he could not stop our forwards regulary. In the 26th minute the same Zaccardo made a handball in the penalty-area and referee Rizzoli whistled for a penalty, but “forgot” to give Zaccardo his second yellow, so red card.

Luca Toni realized the penalty and scored his first goal in the world’s most beautiful shirt.

 

In the 2nd half Parma was the most dangerous team in the field, while Genoa played a lot better then last week. In the 71st minute Zaccardo (the man of the 2 yellow cards!) headed the equalizer behind Eduardo who saved Genoa with an incredible reaction a few minutes later. After all the draw was right, but what if Zaccardo got his deserved second yellow card in the 26th minute ?!

Despite the openinggoal of Mattia Destro in the 6th minute and half an hour of fantastic football, Genoa lost the first homematch of the season by 1-3 against Chievo Verona. In the 45th minute Moscardelli scored the equalizer with a lucky shot against the leg of Dainelli. After the teabreak there was only one team in the field: Chievo Verona, that scored another 2 times (Marcolini and Pellissier) and deserved the victory. After the great start in Udine a little deception to Mr. Gasperini and the team. Chievo Verona now is on top of the standings and the only team with 2 victories in Serie A.

Genoa won the openingmatch of the season 2010-2011 by 0-1 against Udinese. The only goal was scored by Mesto in the 81st minute. A cross of Rafinha was headed by Dainelli to Mesto, but the ball was too high and just below him so he could only try to touch it with a bicycle-kick. Mesto succeeded and the ball went besides goalkeeper Handanovic inside the goal at the far post: 0-1.

Genoa started the match with the following players: Eduardo; Rossi, Dainelli, Ranocchia; Rafinha, Milanetto, Veloso, Criscito; Palacio, Toni and Sculli. Unfortunately Luca Toni had to leave the pitch during the 1st half with an injury and was substituted by Palladino. In the 2nd half Mr. Gasperini also brought Zuculini and Mesto in the field. As often Gasperson made the right substitutions with Mesto as the only goalscorer. In the last minutes Genoa played with only 10 players because of the injury of Palladino, but our defense was strong, very strong. The first 3 points are ours !

After the victory against Milan the misson was already accomplished, but Genoa also wanted to stay at the 8th position in the standings to be qualified to the 1/8 finals of the Coppa Italia and avoid playing at Ferragosto (15th August) in the 3rd round of the Italian cup. On the other hand: our topscorer Rodrigo Palacio (7 goals) already got permission to return in Argentina and Mr. Gasperini did not protest against his squalification of 2 matches instead of the usual 1 match.

The match was decided in 3 minutes. In the 18th minute Robert Acquafresca could not beat goalkeeper Campagnolo at their eye to eye confrontation, 1 minute later Ivan Juric got his second yellow card and had to leave to pitch, while again 1 minute later Maxi Lopez scored the only goal. Because Parma beat Livorno by 4-1 the yellowblue ended 8th in the standings and we are nineth.

Sometimes you need your friends to realize your wishes. Because Genoa-fan Claudio Spagnolo was killed by Milan-hooligans in 1995 it is every year very difficult to buy a ticket to this match. Mostly only Genoa seasonticket-holders are welcome in the stadium, but this year also Genoani living in Liguria and officialy registered Milan-fans. Because Milan and their fans never said sorry since 1995 the Genoa-fans wanted to block the visitors-sector of Luigi Ferraris stadium. Because of this the authorities decided Saturdaynight at 23.00 (16 hours before the match) that Genoa-Milan is forbidden to all fans: 25.500 Genoani and 371 Milanisti. I doubted should I enter the stadium with my press-card or should I stay outside together with the 600 Genoa-fans that protested against this crazy decision of the authorities? Because all of these fans wanted only 1 thing: watching the match, I decided to enter the press-sector of the stadium to do what everybody wanted: be present to see Genoa beating the stars of A.C. Milan. And I was lucky, but from the first till the last minute I felt sorry to the fans outside that bought a (season)ticket and should be inside the stadium, just like me!

      

The only positive effect of an empty stadium (while professional football in my opinion always should be played with an audiance) is that you can hear the players and the referee in the field. The game also is more fair, because the public doesn’t influence the match and the referee. To be honest Milan was the best team in the first half and we were lucky that the score was still 0-0 at halftime. In the second half Rodrigo Palacio and Mimmo Criscito took the lead in the field, which brought Genoa the openinggoal by Giuseppe Sculli who headed a corner of Fatic behind goalkeeper Dida: 1-0. After the goal Milan tried everything to score the equalizer, but both Borriello and Huntelaar missed great chances. The most close to another goal was our Robert Acquafresca who shot the ball from outside the penaltyarea against the crossbar. Immediately after the last whistle of the referee all the players of Genoa ran outside to stadium to celebrate the victory with the fans that were still protesting and singing Genoa-songs. They deserved it!

With this victory Genoa still is on the 8th position in the standings, 2 points ahead of Parma and 4 of Fiorentina and Bari. The mission of this season: ending at the left side of the standings is now 1 match before the end officially accomplished. Grazie ragazzi!

Genoa missed 8 line-up players against Bari: 3 defenders (Bocchetti, Dainelli and Moretti), 2 midfieldplayers (Rossi and Kharja) and 3 strikers (Jankovic, Palacio and Suazo). On the bench Mr. Gasperini was like a father with Amelia, Fatic and 5 youthplayers. In the 1st half Bari was the best team in the field but the Pugliesi missed serveral chances: 0-0 at halftime. In the 12th minute of the second half our rented player to Bari: Meggiorini scored the opening goal: 1-0. Mr. Gasperini thought Meggiorini made a foul before he scored and protested heavily which costed him a red card and 2 matches squalification. After the goal of course Genoa tried to score the equalizer and assistent-coach Bruneo Caneo substited Zapater, Sculli and Palladino by the youngsters: Cofie, Boakye and El Shaarawi. This all did not help and in the last 5 minutes Bari scored 2-0 and 3-0 which was too much. Because also all our concurrents lost we are still on the 8th position in the standings, but the European dream is definitively over.
